You have that friend. You know exactly who I mean.
The one who starts with ‘Okay, but listen’ and you already know the story is about to be three times bigger than what actually happened. The one who turns a queue at the supermarket into an epic drama. The one who says ‘I’m not even exaggerating’ and exaggerates with that very sentence.
You love them. And this shirt is for them.
Two sentences, one truth
‘Seems like a true story.’ Full stop. ‘Except it’s not.’ Full stop.
Two centred sentences, one below the other. The first draws you in; the second sends you back with a smile. It’s a setup and a punchline in one design.
On the product page, I wrote: ‘Ironically true.’ And that’s accurate. We all exaggerate. We all embellish our stories. Admitting it is funny because everyone recognises it.
Why it works out in the world
Most Blacksunset shirts ask something of the reader. ‘What If It’s Not a T-Shirt?’ asks for a philosophical frame of mind. ‘Not Here to Explain’ asks for a particular outlook on life. ‘And So?’ asks you to be comfortable with ambiguity.
‘Seems Like a True Story’ asks almost nothing. You read it and laugh. That’s all.
And that’s exactly why it’s one of my most sociable designs. People read it, smile and say: ‘Wait, that’s you.’ Or: ‘I know exactly who that would suit.’
The best gift you can give
This shirt was made as a gift for someone famous for their stories. Someone who knows they exaggerate. Who knows everyone knows they exaggerate. And who carries on anyway.
Give them this shirt and they’ll immediately understand why. It isn’t an insult. It’s a declaration of affection. It says: ‘I see you.’
