BEACH TOTEM – Four symbols, one vertical frame

BEACH TOTEM – Four symbols, one vertical frame

Waves. Sunset. Palm. Fin.

Four symbols that every beach person knows. And I pressed them into one vertical frame – like the tattoo you never dared to get.

Why totem

A totem is an object that carries an identity. Ancient cultures carved them into wood – vertical pillars where each symbol meant something. Animal, god, lineage, place.

Beach Totem does the same thing – only its symbols are from the beach. From top to bottom: waves that move. The sun that sets. Palm with box. And a fin that hints at something that’s underwater.

This is not a description of the beach. It’s a compression of the beach—everything that defines the place reduced to four icons in one vertical panel. And this panel is like a badge on your chest. Like belonging. Like someone asking “where are you from?” and you would show your chest.

Vertical frame

I use vertical composition a lot. “NEVER.” is vertical. “Presence Is Louder Than Noise” is vertical. This is the visual language of Blacksunset – elements that flow from top to bottom, not left to right.

But Beach Totem is the first where a vertical frame contains multiple images. It’s not one word or one line—it’s four scenes that make up a story. You count them from top to bottom like a cartoon square: first the sea, then the sun, then the shore, then the water. It’s a day at the beach, compressed into one panel.

And that panel is narrow and long enough that it looks graphically like something from a tattoo parlor—not a T-shirt. This is intentional. I wanted this design to look like it’s always been on your skin.

Three beach shirts, three languages

The Blacksunset catalog now includes three designs that speak of the sea:

One Wave– one line, the most minimal. The sea reduced to form, without any detail. For those who want a reference, not a picture.

Summer ’72– retro surf poster, large illustration, warm tones. Nostalgia and color. For those who want atmosphere.

Beach Totem– four symbols in a vertical frame, black and white, graphic. The sea reduced to icons. For those who want an identity.

Three different languages, one and the same love. And you don’t have to choose, but if you do, think about which one is your beach self.

The tattoo you don’t get

I wrote on the product page, “Like the tattoo you never dared to get.” And it’s more than a sales pitch.

I know people who want something beachy for their skin. But a tattoo is forever and the ‘what if’ is strong. Beach Totem is the answer to that ‘what if’ – you can wear symbols that belong to you without being forever. You can put them on when the feeling is right and put them in the wardrobe when it’s not.

It’s the aesthetics of a tattoo without the obligation of a tattoo. And this is where a T-shirt does something that a tattoo can’t, it’s flexible.
